Around 50 automobiles have been smeared with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the German municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to law enforcement.
Vehicles, exterior walls and mailboxes were defaced, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they reported in a official communication.
Police say they were notified during the night on Wednesday, when a resident observed that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored liquid.
The liquid had been placed in the pattern of a swastika, they reported.
Police then discovered multiple other smeared vehicles and residential walls in the surrounding area.
Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under regulations outlawing the public display of Nazi symbols.
Law enforcement report early analysis indicate the substance was most likely blood from a person.
"There is still no clue as to its origin; investigators are presently not cognizant of any physical harm in connection with the occurrence," they stated.
Local authorities said they were trying "to unravel the mystery" and have asked to the public for information.
A high-ranking political figure said the incident made him stunned and required to be solved rapidly.
"This incident strikes at the core of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the extremist attack in 2020," he posted on social media, referring to the killing of nine people by a assailant aiming at residents of migrant background in 2020.
